| Prerequisite For Ensemble Participation Band- 1. Marching band/concert band is considered as one. Students in concert band must be in marching band. However, students with unusual scheduling difficulties may take marching band only, but not for credit. 2. Jazz band wind and percussion players must be members of marching/concert band and/or orchestra. 3. Piano and guitar players who qualify, do not have to be a member of chorus, band or orchestra. Orchestra- Orchestra winds and percussion players must be members of the marching/concert band. Chorus- Students involved in show choir must be a member of the concert choir. |
| Applied Music Policies Excused/Unexcused Absences- students will be expected to follow the attendance policy found in the attendance section of the student handbook. Make-up policy for excused absences- 1. concert absence- student will attend an approved concert or recital at or above the level of maturity and ability of the EAHS ensemble. The student will write a critique of this performance, showing that he/she understands the important features of each work performed and of the actual performance given. 2. marching band performance- student will schedule make-up time with the director no later than two weeks following a missed performance. |
| Major Course Outcomes 1. Students will demonstrate medium-advanced proficiency in their specific performance area. 2. Students will define and perform all common aspects of music notation including, signs, symbols, and foreign words and phrases. 3. Students will demonstrate various styles of performance. 4. Students will evaluate musical performances of his/her own and others according to objective musical criteria. 5. Students will respond accurately to conducting gestures, techniques, and score markings as they relate to musical expression. 6. Students will have a basic knowledge of music and composers of various periods. 7. Students will incorporate the effective use of materials, equipment, and tools inot the production of works in the arts. Expectations 1. Students will dress in the appropriate "uniform" for each performance as stipulated by each director. |
| Grading and Evaluation Students will be given a percentage grade at the end of each marking period based on the number of points earned. Students enrolled only in chorus will be given a percentage grade at the end of the 2nd and 4th marking periods only. Directors will award a grade to each student they instruct. Students who perform for more than one director will receive a mathematical average of the directors' grades. 50 pts. Individual performance evaluation- students will demonstrate mastery of scales, rudiments, specific instrumental/vocal techniques and prepared ensemble excerpts for evaluation. 30 pts. Concert performance- students will be evaluated on the quality of contribution to the performance including musical performance and overall performance etiquette. 25 pts. Individual knowledge assessment- students will demonstrate mastery knowledge of the music literature and music theory concepts. 50 pts Concert rehearsal evaluation- students participation in rehearsals will be evaluated on the basis of music performance elements rubric. 10 pts Sectional participation- students will be periodically assessed on material covered in the sectional rotation. 10 pts Marching performances- students will be evaluated on quality of contribution to the performance including musical performance, attire and overall performance etiquette. 5 pts Marching rehearsal evaluation- students participation in rehearsals will be evaluated on the basis of musical contribution and on-task participation. Varied Writing skills exercises- Students will evaluated on writing skills based on subject content, structure, vocabulary, spelling and other criteria Sectionals Sectionals are offer to students as a way for directors to instruct, remediate, accelerate, and evaluate students in a small group setting. A sectional consists of 30-40 minutes of instruction once every 6 day cycle. The students rotate between periods so that the same class is not missed consecutively. Make-up times are offered as part of this rotation for students who must miss their scheduled sectional. Students are required to attend, but are excused by providing a pass from an academic teacher for one of four reasons. They are: 1. Test or quiz 2. Lab experiment 3. Presentation made by the student 4. Teacher Contact*** ***This excuse is acceptable when a student is not doing well in the class (failing) and/or the class is an honors/AP class that the academic teacher feels the student cannot miss. In either case the academic and music teachers will communicate and make appropriate arrangements. A student is also excused if he or she has a conflicting college course. The pass must be submitted within one week of the scheduled sectional. At least once per marking period the music teacher will use a cycle to evaluate students progress on a given concept. Students will be required to attend a sectional during that rotation. Students may either: 1. Attend their assigned sectional time 2. Attend with another sectional group 3. Make an appointment with the teacher to come in during flex or after school. Each teacher will have the freedom to choose when and how often he or she wishes to evaluate their students depending on the concepts covered throughout the marking period. |
