EAHS Women's Chorus Handbook

Welcome to women's chorus. This is where you and your parents will find information on classroom and concert expectations and other choir specifics. Please take time to read through this handbook and contact me with any questions or concerns by calling the high school (367-1533) or by emailing Mrs. Baxter.

Grades

    A.    Classroom Daily Points:

In addition to the grading scale listed in the applied music syllabus, areas that may be assessed in women's chorus are music theory, music history, music vocabulary, group and/or individual singing, posture, adherence to classroom rules and procedures and active participation.

Active participation skills are built on the foundation of self-discipline and the ability to work with others. Some of the skills necessary are
  • strives for accuracy/excellence
  • posture
  • musicality
  • impulsivity control
  • persistence
  B.    Additional Points:

I will average in additional points for those individuals who go above and beyond the course requirements. These points will be added as follows:
  • 10 points- those who help prepare in a meaningful way for an upcoming concert
  • 30 points- those who participate in the EAHS musical production
  • 20 points- those who attend every required sectional in each assigned marking period

   C.    Auditions and Sectionals:

All students are required to sing an "audition" for Mrs. Baxter. This must be arranged during the first week of classes. The audition may be taped and will be used for range placement within the group.

Sectionals will be held throughout the school year for those students who do not already have an instrumental sectional. Each section is worth 10 points of the marking period grade. They will proceed as follows:
  • 1st marking period- no sectionals for women's choir
  • 2nd marking period- only for those who cannot read music (along with c. choir members)
  • 3rd & 4th marking periods- sectionals women's chorus and concert choir members separately
The ability to read music will be determined by a simple theory test. This will not affect students' grades, but will determine whether or not the student needs to attend music-reading sectionals.

Folder and Music

Each student will be assigned a folder to share with one other student in their voice section. All folders will be stored in the music cabinet in the choir room. The two students together will be responsible for the folder itself and the music contained within. Fines will be issued for misuse or loss. The fine will be the total amount of the music and/or folder purchase price. Folder checks will occur at random. Students should keep track of their own music and keep their hands off of folders other than their own. The cabinet will be locked before and after choir. Students are also required to keep the folder pencil with the folder at all times for necessary music notations.

Concerts

     A.    Women's Chorus Performances and Events

These concerts are a public sharing of the group's accomplishments and a communication of the language of music. In addition, concerts are an extension of classroom learning. This culminating experience is graded heavily. Therefore, all students are required to attend each concert. THIS MUST BE A TOTAL GROUP COMMITMENT! Parents and students are encouraged to note the dates of events, get them written on the calendar and schedule around them. Work is not an acceptable excuse for missing either the dress rehearsal or the performance! The participation of each student is essential to the success of the musical performance. There is no way to "make up" a missed performance; it only happens once. Be there!

I do, however, realize that emergencies such as illness and/or an accident may occur from time to time in which case Mrs. Baxter should be contacted as soon as possible. Any emergency absence may be made up with an approved project equal to the time the other students spent at the concert or event. Examples: concert critique, written report, classroom service or extra performances.

    B.    Dress -- a neat appearance displays a positive attitude about the performance
  • Students will be assigned a choir robe as the first concert approaches. Students are responsible for their assigned robe. Reimbursement of $30.00 will be required if anything happens to the robe while in your possession. Checks should be made payable to "EAHS".
  • Ladies should be prepared to wear a black skirt, white blouse, "nude" stockings and black closed-toe dress shoes.
    C.    Miscellaneous
  • On program evenings all students should arrive no later than 1/2 hour before curtain.
  • Report directly to the choral room for warm-ups.
  • Bring folders, music and any additional materials needed for the concert.
