Reflexive means that you do the action to yourself, like in taking a shower: bañarse, or to shave: afeitarse.
You conjugate them by the ending ar, er, or ir like normal, but you must take off the "se" and add a pronoun (because of the "se") like me (for I), te (for you), se (for he or she), nos (for we), os (for vosotros/you all), se (for they, or ustedes/you all)
For example: bañarse: to take a shower
In the present:
Yo me baño (I take a shower)
Tú te bañas (you take a shower)
Él se baña
Nosotros nos bañamos
Vosotros os bañáis
Ellos se bañan
In the preterit:
Yo me bañé
Tú te bañaster
Él se bañó
Nosotros nos bañamos
Vosotros os bañasteis
Ellos se bañaron
**You don't use the reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os, se) if you do the action to some one or something else. For example:
Yo me baño (it's reflexive because I do it to myself)
Él se baña (it's reflexive because he does it to himself)
Yo baño a mi perro (it's not reflexive because I bathe my dog, not myself)

The preterit is a verbal tense used to talk about the past. It has its own endings:
For verbs that end in "ar" like hablar: é (yo), aste (tú), ó (él/ella/usted), amos (nosotros), asteis (vosotros), aron (ellos/ellas/ustedes)
hablé hablamos
hablaste hablásteis
habló hablaron
For verbs that end in "er/ir" like escribir: í (yo), iste (tú), ió (él/ella/usted), imos (nosotros), ísteis (vosotros), ieron (ellos/ellas/ustedes)
escribí escribimos
escribiste escribísteis
escribió escribieron
There are many irregular verbs, but the majority of them take these endings: e, iste, o, imos, isteis, ieron (no accents on any of them)
estuve estuvimos
estuviste estuvisteis
estuvo estuvieron
The highly irregular verbs (they don't follow any pattern and you must memorize them) are:
Ser: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron
Ir: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron
Decir: dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron
Traer: traje, trajiste, trajo, trajimos, trajisteis, trajeron
Dar: di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron
Ver: vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis, vieron

Hola, we are starting our communications unit. We will expand our writing abilities, and we will learn common expressions and vocabulary to help us communicate better. We will learn how to form and use the passive voice (please see the grammar section of this website for a brief explanation), and we will work on multiple projects: pen pals (first one due 9/25), mistery story (due 10/27), and karaoke (due 10/14).

Hi, we will start a new unit, lesson 2 in the textbook. We will be learning how to talk in the past in Spanish, and we will continue to learn new vocabulary. Please review your flashcards at home, and do your homework, it really helps to learn the concepts studied in class. There is no homework today (9/16).

Last night homework was to illustrate (draw pictures with some sentences) the story we created in class (if you were absent, I have a copy for you). I hope you enjoyed it, and get used to it because we will be doing a lot of stories and a lot of different activities that have to do with the stories. This is a great way to learn vocabulary and grammar in context (so that it makes sense).

You need to review the tenses you have learned up until now (the present, the preterit, the imperfect, the future, the conditional, the subjunctive (present and imperfect).
You also need to review the vocabulary from Spanish II and III (the packet I gave you and using your flash cards).
You need to pay special attention to the subjunctive and when to use it.
You need to review the use of "por" vs. "para", and also the direct and indirect-object pronouns (lo, las, los, las, le, les)
Posted by Johanna Jennings on Sep 3, 2008 at 2:29 PM to
Spanish IV.
You need to practice and review the present tense and how to conjugate verbs in the present tense:
There are three kinds of verbs, verbs that end in "ar", "er", and "ir". To conjugate a verb, you take off the "ar", "er", or "ir" and add the appropriate endings.
Ar: o, as, a, amos, ais, an
Er: o, es, e, emos, eis, en
Ir: o, es, e, imos, is, en
For example: hablar-to speak
yo hablo, tú hablas, él /ella/usted habla, nosotros hablamos, vosotros habláis, ellos/ellas/ustedes hablan
You also need to study the irregular verbs (the ones that don't follow the pattern above)
saber-to know- yo sé, tú sabes
traer-to bring- yo traigo, tú traes
poner-to put- yo pongo, tú pones
estar-to be (places, feelings)- yo estoy, tú estás
hacer-to do- yo hago, tú haces
tener-to have- yo tengo, tú tienes
salir-to leave or go out- yo salgo, tú sales
venir-to come- yo vengo, tú vienes
decir-to say or to tell- yo digo, tú dices
dar-to give- yo doy, tú das
ser-to be (adjectives, time, weather)- yo soy, tú eres
ir-to go- yo voy, tú vas
poder-to be able to/can- yo puedo, tú puedes
Finally, you need to sutudy your vocabulary (the packet I gave you)

¡Hola! I am from Colombia. I was born and raised there until I was 12 years old. I then moved to New York and lived there for 5 years. I went back to Colombia for one year to complete 11th grade. I graduated high school there (we only go until 11th grade) and moved to Lancaster. I then went to Ephrata High School and completed 12th grade there. After that, I went to Millersville to become a teacher. I just finished my master's degree in Education in Spanish.
I have a wonderful family. They are a blessing in my life. My husband, Michael, is a teacher in the Ephrata School District. my daughter, Celeste, is 7 and is in second grade. My son, Julián, is two. I also have five pets: Luna (Celeste's puppy dog), Tiffany (my cat), Chancho and Diego (my kittens), and Speedy (Celeste's hermit crab),
Hola, please remember that you need to have a three-ring binder for this class. You need to keep all the work that we do and file it using the prescribed dividers (please refer to the portfolio hand out). I will be checking them this Friday September 5th.
